This is the overview of Patrick's case. Read it carefully.
Patrick, age 14
The coach of a local swimming club shared a concern about a member of his junior squad with the boy's school.
Patrick attended the club with his younger brother. He had been a leading athlete in the squad, but there had been significant changes in his behaviour.
Their parents had divorced 10 months ago, and both boys were living with their mother who brought them to and from training sessions. While the younger brother had become quite withdrawn, Patrick had become increasingly disruptive and disobedient.
Although this might be expected, both with his age and home life, there had been instances that raised specific concerns: Patrick had begun refusing to share changing facilities with 2 fellow teammates from different ethnic backgrounds. A complaint had been made that he has deliberately held one of these boys under water during a life-saving exercise.
Patrick refused to attend a high profile competition. His mother apologised saying he had opted instead to go to a march with his father that weekend. She was clearly agitated and upset, and said she was finding it increasingly difficult to cope with his behaviour and attitude.
